2nd Annual Chess Club Olympiad
Nine Clubs across NYC come together in September for an epic clash
Last September, 64 players gathered in Bushwick’s BrookLAN for the first annual New York Chess Club Olympiad. Eight teams of eight, with clubs from Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens fought out in a seven round robin tournament to find New Yorks best club players. After a grueling gauntlet, Bushwick Chess and Prospect Park went to tiebreaks for the crown, with both teams having reached an accumulative 44 points across the seven rounds. With International Master Kassa Korley in top seed, and a slew of high-level players, Prospect Park was packed with players. Bushwick Chess was up for the fight themselves with three National Masters who take roost at weekly Nook meetups.
In a stunning display finish, Prospect Park Chess bested Bushwick Chess five to three in tiebreaks, marking them the champions of the Olympiad.
With a year having past, NYC club life have completely changed. The Second Annual Chess Club Olympiad is set to take place September 28th, and tickets will be avaivle shortly for players and spectators alike. With Chess Meet having moved out of state and the next generation of clubs arriving to the scene, there are going to be some changes to the format and play. First and foremost, Bushwick welcomes Daily Press Chess, Williamsburg Chess and Park Slope Chess to compete. Secondly, the previous format of three time controls will be replaced with a standard 8 rounds of 5|2 blitz while the accumulative scoring will be replaced with match points.
The rise of chess continues, in New York and across the world. We are thrilled to see the addition of new teams and recurring players come back home. With the World Rapid and Blitz coming to us in December, NYC is ramping up. After the 2nd Annual Olympiad, we’re gearing up for the Bushwick Masters coming early Winter 2024 to go alongside the world’s best coming to town. More info on that event to come.
