While NYC fireworks are behind us until winter, they are still going off over the board everywhere. Washington Square Park’s prestigious Chess Circle saw a handful of players play a heads-up match alongside some of New York’s famous park players. Where do you play outside? In today’s article we’re gonna check out a couple great spots.
Nook Patio
Last week’s Casual Night saw a full-fledged Bullet Brawl Tournament take over the outside patio. 22 players threw hands over 15 rounds of bullet to see Speed Demon TM Miguel Garcia pull through undefeated for gold. NM Danny Vulis, having only lost to Miguel snagged second while Matt Biancuzzo found himself snuggly in third! Grats to the champs and we’re stoked to see more off week tournaments this summer while the weather permits.
Make sure to swing by TONIGHT 7pm for Bushwick Chess Club Blitz Tournament or stop by the patio for some casual games. We are stoked to have expanded this summer to allow for a mix of players everywhere.
Be sure to keep an eye out for our next Troutman Open Streets as well! Weekends whenever we get a chance to get out!
The Beach
Have you tried chess at the beach? It’s literally iconic. While the sand gets a little frustrating and pieces start wobbling on the wavey ground, spending a sunny day with friends over the board is absolutely worth it. Bring a nice shady covering to keep the clocks cool and backs unburned. We suggest Rockaway for Rippers but the sand’s your oyster or whatever the line is. Also, nothing feels better after a hot loss than jumping straight into the ocean to forget about your blunders.
THE PARK
Chess at the Park is a New York City Institution. Players converge all over the city from Washington Square Park and Union Square to the prestigious Bryant Park tables. Bring your own set or a couple bucks to play someone ready to rumble. Bushwick Chess players try a couple times a year to snag some space at Maria Hernandez, so keep an eye out for us when passing by the skater’s circle.
That’s it for today chess players! Be sure to follow us on instagram and join the discord to keep up with news. See you over the chess board!
