Time to ruffle the feathers and wake up, chess players. It’s grind season! Events all over Brooklyn are coming one after the other, and we’re here to cover some of our favorites. But first, some congratulations are in order.
Last Thursday, 20 Women and Femmes gathered together in collaboration with chess club organizers of North Brooklyn, Astoria, ChessMeet, and NJChessmates to face off in astounding fashion at the first Queens United Rapid Tournament. Hosted at North Brooklyn’s usual Thursday location, Buttery Bar in Greenpoint, players from casual level to WIM Fiona Steil-Antoni showed up to compete for one of Brooklyn's largest prize pools yet. After a five round showdown, Fiona came out on top to win a $440 cash prize. Bushwick’s Top Woman, Najee-Ana Walthrust, fought hard and took home the silver prize of $300 after tiebreaks, only a single loss to Fiona. Bushwick’s Glo Liu championed her way as well with four wins to a bronze finish, taking home a modest free entry to BrookLAN’s March Open and a gift card to Nook!

Tuesday's regular action saw the introduction of class prizes at Bushwick Chess. In a stunning display of strength, Cameron Hull took home gold for a first ever record. Top Woman went to Najee Ana-Walthrust. U1800 award went to Seyon Vas after a tiebreak game, U1600 to Kirill Agashev, U1200 to first time podium finisher Shreyo Banerjee and a classy Upset Prize was awarded to Hendrik De Cuyper for his first ever win against Bushwick’s top player NM Alexis Paredes.
